Madam Director:
On the first day of this month, Law No. 21,342 was enacted, which, among others, makes effective the obligation that companies with workers in face-to-face sessions will have to take out insurance to cover expenses associated with hospitalization, rehabilitation and death as a result of the Covid -19, this while the current health alert lasts.
The news comes just as Chile is going through one of its worst moments in terms of active cases and daily infections since the emergency began in March 2020. In this way, one of the great fears of workers when going to their duties is partly dispelled, such as coverage of expenses associated with an illness that has proven to be costly and slow to recover.
The obligatory nature of hiring, although it falls on the employers, will be a reassuring variable for workers who are or will return to work in person. This regulation, which also includes a series of hygiene and distancing measures, will undoubtedly help to resume the operation of hundreds of companies, which in any case will boost the ailing national economy.
