Vegetable and fruit prices in Poland. Maciej Kmera on the situation in trade

The basket of domestic vegetables is about 13 percent more expensive than last year. Maciej Kmera, a wholesale market expert in Bronisze, pointed out that the weather, especially cold nights, did not help the plants to catch up with the spring vegetation delays. There are still few strawberries for this time of year, Polish cherries are lacking.

Maciej Kmera pointed out that the delay in vegetation usually reaches two weeks, and in the case of some vegetables – even a month. Hence – as explained by an expert on the wholesale market in Bronisze – higher and rising prices of last year’s domestic vegetables.

Compared to the listings from the beginning of June 2020, the prices of last year’s white and red cabbage, Chinese cabbage, parsley, celery and leeks increased the most. On average, the basket of domestic vegetables is approx. 13 percent. more expensive than last year. If, however, we take into account all domestic and imported fruit and vegetables listed on the wholesale market in Bronisze, the value of the basket (as of June 2) increased by 4% compared to the previous year’s quotations. – it follows from Kmera’s calculations.

More expensive vegetables

Many buyers of vegetables and fruits believe that they are very expensive this year. According to Maciej Kmera, such feelings may result from the fact that sellers want to recoup the losses caused by pandemic restrictions. Prices are determined by margins and it is probably here that the reasons for the price increase should be sought.

As he noted, the market shows a slow recovery in trade, but there is still a slight increase in the supply of young domestic vegetables. In recent days, domestic new potatoes have fallen sharply, currently they cost from 2.3 to 3.5 PLN / kg. The price depends on the variety and caliber. For comparison, a year ago, their price was on average 1.5 PLN / kg.

Butter lettuce decreased to less than PLN 2 / piece, the prices of green beans dropped significantly from PLN 40 to PLN 22-25 / kg. The first, exceptionally late – by a month – deliveries of domestic broccoli are priced at 4-5 PLN / kg. The price of tomatoes stabilized at the level of 3-5 PLN / kg. The prices of field cucumbers dropped from 6.5 PLN / kg to 3.5 PLN / kg.

Kmera noticed that it was high season for asparagus. This year, the market offers mainly green asparagus, which is more popular than white asparagus. Their price is between PLN 8-14 / kg. This year they are slightly cheaper than last year.

National fruit

The supply of the first domestic fruit in the season – strawberries – is constantly growing. Now, fruit from foil covers and non-woven fabric are sold, and the price drops to 4-12 PLN / kg – depending on the variety and sorting standard. However, in shops or in the capital’s marketplaces and bazaars, Polish strawberries have to be paid PLN 16-20 per kg. Despite such high prices, strawberries “sell” without much problem.

The appearance of strawberries reduces the demand for apples, hence lower prices for these fruits – noted a wholesale market expert in Bronisze.

Polish sweet cherries are not available for sale yet, and in previous years you could buy early varieties. However, there are Serbian and Spanish cherries on the wholesale market. Their price is PLN 12-18 / kg. The new “exotic” direction of this fruit import is Kazakhstan, cherries from this country cost 22-26 PLN / kg.

There are more and more watermelons, their price is 2.8 to 3.6 PLN / kg, the demand for them is lower than in previous years, due to the low demand caused by the spring, not summer weather.
