‘Giant’ Carrion-eating Crustacean Species Found in Deep Sea

E. attackamensis is an amphipod, a kind crustaceans who are close relatives of shrimp, endemic in Trough Peru-Chile also known as Trough Atacama. “Measuring more than 8 centimeters (3 inches), almost twice the size of its closest relative, making it a giant,” wrote Johanna Weston in The Conversation. Weston is a PhD candidate in marine science at Newcastle University’s School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.

Species it can live in the depths of the sea with a wide vertical range. Individual teenagers and adults species this can be found at trough between 4,974 to 8,081 meters deep. Location found species including the deepest point in Trough Atacama, known as Richard’s Deep.
