Already in the spring of 2020, in the midst of Covid, the women’s section of ASNL had passed very close to the tragedy. But Jacques Rousselot, still president of the ASNL at that time, had ended up finding a solution, in spite of everything, to start again in women’s D2 with interesting means after having successfully passed the DNCG, for the pros, thanks to new personal efforts.
A year later, after another season ravaged by the health crisis, back to the problem box for the girls of the ASNL but, this time, there will not be the possibility of making up for it in extremis with Jacques Rousselot, one of the first French leaders to believe in the development of women’s football. “JR” is no longer in charge since the sale of ASNL on December 31 and, for the new American and Sino-American investors represented by President Gauthier Ganaye, there are other fish to fry.

The annual budget was around 500,000 euros
The thistle club has officially made the request to the authorities to leave the national level and return to the regional championship. Sad news. But the decision taken is obviously dictated by economic imperatives, after this disastrous health crisis for the finances of all professional football clubs, behind closed doors and with declining TV rights. Gone, therefore, the long trips for the girls of the ASNL in D2. Gone, too, the players with a contract and a small salary. The next season, for the ladies of Nancy, will be marked by the return to a completely amateur functioning, against regional teams.
The overall budget for girls was around 500,000 euros. At the level of a club like ASNL, this does not weigh extremely heavily in normal times but, as we have just seen, times are not normal at present, in this health crisis which is still not finished. For Gauthier Ganaye and the new shareholders, the absolute priority is more than ever the pro team of boys in L2.

Gauthier Ganaye: “It’s not an abandonment”
Gauthier Ganaye ensures that the new management of the club will reinvest in the women’s team as soon as the context lends itself to it: “This is not an abandonment of women’s football in Nancy, not at all even. We are putting it on standby, while waiting for the economic situation of ASNL and French football to improve. Moreover, we are not stopping the women’s team, we have simply decided to go down to a level which will be less expensive and more appropriate to the period we are going through. We will put money back into the women’s team as soon as we can and we will be happy to do so. For now, we are totally focused on the pro team which is the locomotive. It is the results in L2 which will allow the whole club to advance ”.
