Flörsheim: “She opened a lot of people’s eyes”

Sophie-Scholl-Schüler carried out a spectacular action as part of a project.

Flörsheim -It seems as if time has frozen – right at the moment when students threw a pile of leaflets over the railing in the entrance hall of the Sophie-Scholle. Numerous pieces of paper flutter in the air above the heads of visitors. They carry messages such as “Everyone has the right to express their opinion freely” or “Everyone is the same”. The messages hang on threads in front of the railing and are intended to remind of the leaflet campaigns of the “White Rose” resistance group against the rule of the National Socialists.

“No matter what sexuality or skin color – the same blood flows through everyone”, is another text. The secondary school students in grade 7 developed the installation together with art teacher Maraike Stich. You had the choice of using original messages from the “White Rose” or of composing your own sentences. The reason for the art project is Sophie Scholl’s 100th birthday this year. The namesake of the Flörsheim secondary school was executed by the Nazi regime for her participation in the “White Rose”. The school commemorates the efforts of the brave resistance fighter with various creative projects.

The preoccupation with Sophie Scholl made some of the students thoughtful. Lucille Krämer explains that she knew that the namesake had made a difference during the Second World War. But she has only now learned how exactly Scholl got involved, says the secondary school student. She noted the sentence: “Hitler cannot win the war, only prolong it” on one of the leaflets. Classmate Ramin Soltani reports that he campaigned for freedom of expression and freedom for women with his messages. While working with Sophie Scholl, he was surprised that a small group like the “White Rose” could make such a difference. The ongoing importance of the topic shows that their efforts have made a difference. “Sophie Scholl opened the eyes of a lot of people,” says secondary school student Ezo Öndes. The story of the resistance fighter shows that the majority are not always right.

The leaflets are not the only sensational installation in the foyer of the Sophie Scholl School. In the middle of the entrance hall is a podium whose clear message consists of a single word: “Freedom” is written in brightly colored letters on the front of the work of art. Several white paper roses protrude from the top of the black box. Two 9th grades of the main school branch developed the eye-catcher – also under the supervision of art teacher Maraike Stich.

The statement of your work is important to the main students involved. The message is “that you should feel free to say what you think”, explains Janosch Paul. One should resist when something is unfair, gives classmate Marvin Lorenz another interpretation. In Sophie Scholl’s time, freedom of expression was severely restricted, recalls student Rania Chaaban. That is why it is important to work for more freedom today.

The Flörsheim secondary school started its series of projects in memory of Sophie Scholl on May 9, the 100th birthday of the resistance fighter. The memory of their work should continue after the summer vacation. Then a project on civil courage in everyday situations is planned. sas
