FC Barcelona-chairman Joan Laporta has made the decision: Ronald Koeman will also be at the helm of Camp Nou next season. According to Diario Sport and Catalunya Radio, the Spanish superpower will announce the news in the coming hours or Friday at the latest.
‘End to the soap opera: Koeman continues!’, Schrijft Sports Diary, or: ‘End of the soap: Koeman stays’. The future of the 58-year-old trainer seemed to hang by a thread. Laporta refused to clarify and gave himself 15 days to evaluate Koeman’s position. The bomb seemed to burst when the president was accused by the Dutch camp of ‘lying’ about Koeman’s alleged hospitalization. That turned out to be a routine check.
Also Catalunya Ràdio reports that Koeman is staying. The ex-national coach of the Dutch national team would hand in part of his salary. Instead, he gets a performance contract: he gets bonuses if he leads Barca to trophies. His new contract would include an option for an extra season, if he manages to achieve certain goals.
Koeman won the Copa del Rey in his first season with Blaugrana. The national title was lost in the last weeks of the season, after a great catch-up race. In the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain turned out to be a size too big in the eighth final.
