Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
A senior senator United States of America said that his country would allow the disbursement of $1 billion to Israel to restore the missile interceptor system. Iron Dome.
US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the Israeli Defense Ministry was expected to request the Pentagon for additional funding this week.
“There’s going to be a $1 billion request to the Pentagon this week from the (Israeli) defense minister for the restoration of the Iron Dome and a few other things, to add to the capabilities of the system,” Graham told reporters in Jerusalem Tuesday.
As reported ReutersGraham made this statement after meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz in Israel.
At the meeting, Graham represented the Senate committee that deals with foreign spending, including military aid.
According to Graham, the Iron Dome greatly helped Israel in defending its territory from the hail of Hamas rockets in eleven days of fighting in May.
The battle between Israel and Hamas had split the stronghold in the United States government, especially within the Democratic Party as the ruler.
Some parties in the Democratic Party have urged the US to suspend military aid to Israel for fear of an increase in civilian casualties in Palestine.
But on the other hand, there are still many parties who support the US policy to help Israel in the midst of Hamas attacks.
“There has been a major division after the mutual attacks between Hamas and Israel in the US, but I can confirm that there remains broad and deep support for Israel within the Democratic Party,” Graham said.
This division subsided after Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire after eleven days of fighting each other. This fighting killed 237 people in the Gaza Strip and 13 people from Israel.
