The plots of land for oil and gas production were issued by previous US President Donald Trump at a wildlife sanctuary in Alaska. This caused objections from environmentalists and indigenous peoples.
Alaska is home to many polar bears, caribou, and migratory birds. Therefore, even during his election campaign, Biden promised to protect the virgin habitat of these animals.
White House National Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy said Biden was “grateful to the Home Office for the prompt action” and that the Trump administration’s rushed oil and gas auction at the reserve “could change the character of the place forever.”
It is also known that the Department of Internal Affairs notified the tenants of the decision. In response, the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Administration, which owns seven ANWR leases and Alaska officials, said they were disappointed with the decision.
“I oppose this attack on the Alaskan economy and will use all necessary means to nullify this flagrant federal abuse,” said Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy.
