New Delhi, Jun 1 (EFE) .- India on Tuesday registered 2,795 deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the first time in 34 days that this figure has fallen below 3,000 deaths, and 127,510 infections.

More than 331,000 people have died from covid-19 in India since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest data released by the Indian Ministry of Health, a number only surpassed in the world by the United States and Brazil.

The decline in the number of daily deaths, despite the fact that experts warn that the actual mortality figures could be higher, contrasts with the more than 4,000 deaths registered in mid-May.

Infections have experienced a similar decline in recent weeks, in a country that has experienced a virulent second wave of the coronavirus that collapsed the health system in some states and caused a lack of oxygen and hospital beds.

The number of infections in the last 24 hours rose to 127,510, the lowest number in 54 days and a figure far removed from the peak of more than 400,000 daily cases recorded in early May.

India is the second most affected country in the world by the pandemic in absolute terms, only behind the United States, and already has 28.1 million infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

The devastating second wave suffered by India, especially between April and May, has aggravated the economic effects of the pandemic on the Asian country.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) revealed yesterday that India’s gross domestic product (GDP) will fall by 7.3% during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which ended in March, a steep decline due to a strict lockdown that during the first fiscal quarter sent the economy plummeting 24.4%, and a second wave that has led to restrictions in many states.
