Samsung begins mass production of 120Hz OLED display panels for iPhone 13

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Samsung It will reportedly manufacture OLED display panels for certain iPhone 13 models that are expected to launch later this year, and some future iPad models. The company will manufacture panels with a 120Hz refresh rate and LTPO technology for the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro.

Quoted by Gadget NDTV, Monday, May 31, 2021, the screen of the model will make this series the first series of Apple which gets a refresh rate of 120Hz. Samsung is also reported to be producing OLED screens for some iPad models, starting next year.

Korean publication The Elec reports that Samsung Display will manufacture more than 80 million OLED panels for Apple on its A3 Line at its Asan plant. The Korean company is also rumored to be continuing to produce OLED panels for the iPhone 12 and older models, even after the launch of the iPhone 13 series. In total, Samsung is expected to produce 120 million OLED units for Apple this year.

LG Display is also mentioned as another provider of OLED panels for other iPhone 13 series. This is likely for the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 phones. Reports say, LG Display will produce 30 million OLED units for the iPhone 13 lineup, and a total of 50 million OLED units for Apple’s older iPhones this year.

Chinese manufacturing giant BOE is also rumored to be producing 9 million OLED panels for Apple. Furthermore, the report also adds that the production of OLED panels has been started by the three companies. This is one month earlier than last year’s timeline, suggesting the company could launch the iPhone 13 range slightly earlier than last year’s iPhone 12 range.

While many Android smartphones on the market already offer a 120Hz refresh rate, Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup will be the first in the iPhone lineup to offer this feature. To save battery, Apple will most likely integrate a variable refresh rate that can switch frequencies depending on what’s on the screen.

Separately, ETNews reports that Samsung may be producing OLED displays for some iPad models starting next year. Apple plans to move from LCD and Mini-LED panels to OLED panels for the iPad in stages and the transition process is likely to begin in 2022. It is also reported that iPads released in 2023 may have an OLED display. While the 12.9-inch iPad Pro released this year switched from LCD to Mini-LED. However, some users have reported display issues.
