TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- Technology companies LG officially confirmed its exit from the smartphone business in early April 2021, but it will take some time for operations to stop. According to a report released from Korea, today, Monday, May 31, 2021, is the last day of production for LG phones and tablets.
Quoted from GSM Arena, the LG Electronics factory in Vietnam where most of LG’s phones are being assembled will turn to producing household devices. That way the workers do not lose their jobs. “The remaining workers from the phone department will be reassigned at the end of July,” LG said.
The factory in Haiphong was founded in 2015 and has made TVs and equipment other than phones. In addition, LG Innotek and LG Display’s subsidiaries manufacture camera modules and screens there.
The Korea Herald reported earlier that LG Electronics is on track to become the largest home appliance maker with record sales of US$6.3 billion in the second quarter. LG topped Whirlpool’s main competition in the first quarter, now in the second and analysts expect it to stay on top for the rest of the year.
As a goodbye, LG announced to share its newest series, the roll phone LG Velvet 2 Pro—about 3,000 units—with a special price as a ‘souvenir’ to employees in Korea. However, it did not go according to plan because LG reportedly experienced a surge in orders for its last production.

Multiple models—including LG Q-series—will get Android 12, the latest premium model is expected to upgrade to Android 13. Users will also be able to receive after-sales service for 4 years from the device manufacture date.
