Brave Florida 7 year old rescues his family

Because he saved the life of his family in a boat accident, a boy (7) from Florida is celebrated as a hero. Little Chase Poust swam to the bank alone for over an hour to get help. Without the courageous commitment of the seven-year-old, his father and sister would probably not have had a chance.

Family went fishing in Jacksonville

With his father Steven and four-year-old Abigail (4), Chase went fishing off the Mandarin Point peninsula in Jacksonville on Friday evening. While the boat is anchored, the children swim in the water. “The current was so strong that my sister couldn’t hold on to the boat,” Chase told CNN. “So I let go of the boat and grabbed her.”

Father told his son that he loved him – then the boy swam away

But the seven-year-old also gets into trouble. Steven Poust jumps into the water to save his children. But he can’t just hold onto her. He calls to Chase to swim to the bank. “I told him I love him because I didn’t know what was going to happen,” explains the father.

At some point he can no longer hold four-year-old Abigail. “I tried everything, but she drifted away from me,” recalls Poust. Fortunately, the girl is wearing a life jacket and therefore does not sink.

Florida: Boy struggled against the current

Chase doesn’t have a life jacket and swims on his back. This saves energy. “It wasn’t easy because I had to fight the current,” Chase told News4Jax. He bravely fights his way ashore and knocks on a front door for help.

Jacksonville firefighters take the boat out and an hour later discover Steven Poust and his daughter Abigail in the water – more than a mile from the boat. “I screamed as loud as I could and waved my arms,” says Poust of the moment when he discovered the rescuers.

Father of Chase Poust: He saved our lives

Steven Poust and his son Chase were not required to wear a life jacket: the law only requires children under the age of six to do so.

What he owes his son can hardly be put into words. Steven Poust describes it quite simply like this: “The little man made it ashore and got help. And that saved our lives.” (bst)
