Originally, the Copa América would be jointly hosted by Colombia and Argentina from June 13th. On the 20th, Conmebol decided to withdraw the competition from Colombia due to the violent clashes and protests that have been taking place in the midst of the country’s pension reform. At the time, the country’s government asked Conmebol to postpone the competition. The South American body immediately rejected the request and announced that Argentina would take over the entire tournament.

Last Sunday, Argentina’s Interior Minister, Eduardo Pedro, stated that the local health situation, in the midst of the new coronavirus pandemic, makes the tournament “very difficult” to take place. On Saturday, the country began nine days of total quarantine, while recording an unprecedented daily average of 30,000 infections and nearly 500 deaths, with the health system at its limit. Soon after, Conmebol announced the suspension of competition in Argentina.

According to the “Sportv” channel, the entity will hold an emergency meeting at 9 am this Monday, and the cancellation of the competition is on the agenda. But Conmebol is still hopeful of being able to hold the tournament, informed that other countries have applied for the host, and is analyzing the options.

Last week, the governments of Ecuador and Venezuela sent official proposals to Conmebol to receive the games that would take place in Colombia. Chile would be one of those countries that offered themselves, but it is an unlikely alternative. Taking the Copa America to the USA, as was speculated, is an option discarded, according to “Uol”.

Conmebol recognizes that the scenario is complicated, but the cancellation would represent a loss. The competition’s broadcasting rights are worth around US$100 million (around R$522 million).

The Brazilian team is in Group A of the competition, along with Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The premiere is scheduled for June 14, at 20:00 (GMT).
