Hundreds of cops French and four helicopters were deployed to hunt down a former soldier, who opened fire on police in response to a domestic violence incident in southwestern France.
As reported by the news agency AFP, Monday (31/5/2021), around 210 police officer and four helicopters were scouring the forest in the Dordogne region for the 29-year-old. The former soldier has an electronic tag for having been convicted of domestic violence.
“The man is heavily armed and is about 30 years old. He is athletic and moves fast,” Francine Bourra, the mayor of Lardin-Saint-Lazare, told AFP. AFP.
“We’ve been able to find it in an area of about four to five kilometers but it’s a forested area, difficult to access,” he said.
“The suspect was detained for domestic violence and that’s why he was wearing an electronic bracelet,” Bourra added.
Andre Petillot, the regional police commander, said the suspect was “someone who knows the area well and is adaptable”.
“Contact has been made (with the man) several times … but was followed by gunfire. Every time there was contact with him he opened fire,” Petillot said, adding that police did not return fire.
