What’s next with electricity prices? In other EU countries, they have fewer worries

Electricity prices in the wholesale market, which is most influenced by the supply-demand interplay, are among the highest in Europe. What does this mean for us – consumers? It turns out a lot.

According to experts, the pressure to increase their prices will remain with us in this decade, as the supply of CO2 emission allowances will significantly decrease and the Polish electricity mix will change gradually.

And what is responsible for this state of affairs? One of the highest emissivity of the Polish energy mix among the larger EU countries. In addition, there is a record price of CO2 emission allowances on the emissions trading market (EUA).

However, the price of electricity itself is not excessive. At least when compared to the EU countries. In 2020, they amounted to an average of about EUR 0.15 per 1 kWh, which placed us in the middle of the ranking of EU countries.

The Germans paid the most for electricity – almost EUR 0.32. All because of high network fees and taxes included in the price for the end user. They constitute almost 80 percent. electricity prices.

Interestingly, while average electricity prices in the European Union are falling, in Poland they are rising. In the second half of 2020, the increase in electricity prices in our country was almost the largest in the EU, according to Eurostat data.

In Poland, the average electricity prices not only increased by 9.7 percent. during the year, but this increase was almost the highest in the European Union (in this respect only Luxembourg was ahead of Poland with a result of 10.3%).
