Doha’s remarks came shortly after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was declared victorious in Syria’s re-election, which Gulf countries, Europe and the West considered a joke.
“So far we don’t see anything on the horizon for a political solution that is acceptable to the Syrian people, the approach and behavior (of the regime) has not changed,” Mohammed said.
“There is no motivation for us to rebuild relations with the current Syrian regime. The Syrian regime is committing crimes against its people,” he continued. Also read: Assad wins the Syrian presidential election by winning 95.1% of the vote
Qatar is among several regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, which has backed rebels in Syria’s decade-long civil war.

The UAE reopened its mission to Damascus in late 2018 in a bid to counter the influence of non-Arab actors such as Iran, which along with Russia supports Assad, and Turkey, which supports the rebels. The UAE has a power of attorney in Syria.
So far only Oman, an Arab country that still maintains diplomatic relations with Damascus. Oman again placed an ambassador in Syria in 2020.
