LONDON – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancee, Carrie Symonds, were married Saturday in a small private ceremony in London, their Downing Street office said Sunday.
The president’s office confirmed reports in the Mail on Sunday and The Sun that the couple had married in Westminster Catholic Cathedral to a small group of friends and family.
“The Prime Minister and Miss Symonds were married yesterday afternoon in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral,” Downing Street said. “The couple will celebrate their wedding with family and friends next summer.”
“The Mail on Sunday” explains that thirty guests attended the wedding – the maximum currently allowed by the pandemic – including the groom’s father, Stanley Johnson, and his brothers Leo, Jo and Rachel, without knowing if they were present the prime minister’s eldest sons.
According to media, the couple sent invitations to family and friends for a celebration on July 30, 2022.
Johnson, 56, and Symonds, a 33-year-old environmental activist, announced their engagement in February 2020 and have a one-year-old son, Wilfred.
It is Johnson’s third marriage and Symonds’ first. The prime minister has at least five other children from previous relationships.
The last British Prime Minister to marry during his tenure was Lord Liverpool in 1822.
The marriage came after a bumpy political week for Johnson, who on Wednesday was accused by his former adviser Dominic Cummings of erring in the government’s response to the coronavirus and being “unfit for the job.”
An ethical investigation concluded Friday that the prime minister acted “recklessly” in renovating his Downing Street apartment without knowing where the money came from, but cleared him of bad practices.
Jon Trickett, a member of the opposition Labor Party, said the marriage was “a good way to cover up the bad news this week” like the Cummings statement and the report on the financing of the Downing Street redevelopment.
