LIVE | Russia sees corona figures rise | Inland

This article will be updated throughout the day.

16.33 – Russia is struggling with rising corona figures

Moscow is again struggling with an upward trend in corona figures. In 24 hours, health authorities in the Russian capital registered 3,719 new cases of infection. For the fourth day in a row, there were more than 3,000.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin expressed his concern on TV on Sunday. He attributes the increase to the week’s holiday in May, among other things. During those days off, the Muscovites visited a doctor considerably less, so that virus infections only came to light later. In addition, there have been hardly any restrictions in Moscow for months.

Sobyanin is also unhappy about the vaccination rate in his city of 12 million inhabitants. It’s going way too slow. Compared to other European metropolises, Moscow has so far far fewer residents vaccinated. According to the mayor, the fact that many people refuse a shot is “a shame”.

In all of Russia, only about 11 percent of the population has been vaccinated. In total, 9694 new cases of infection were added on Sunday. The daily number has been below 10,000 since mid-March, but is now approaching that limit again, partly due to the impending escalation in Moscow. In the past 24 hours, 355 Russian patients died of Covid-19. The overall death rate has officially passed 120,000.

14.18 – Number of German corona infections falls below important risk level

The number of corona infections has fallen below a significant risk level in all sixteen German federal states. This level of risk determines whether a broad reopening of society and the further relaxation of the corona measures are considered safe.

The centrally located state of Thuringia was the last to reach the limit of seven consecutive days on which fewer than 50 people per 100,000 inhabitants tested positive for the corona virus. This is apparent from data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German equivalent of RIVM.

In Thuringia, 47.5 people per 100,000 inhabitants tested positive last week. Across Germany, that number currently stands at 35.2, the lowest since mid-October last year. Things are going particularly well in the northern states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (14.7), Schleswig-Holstein (17.9), Brandenburg (20.0), Hamburg (22.4) and Lower Saxony (23.1).

In addition, intensive care units (ICs) in Germany currently have the lowest number of corona patients since the beginning of November last year.

According to German experts, the number of corona infections in the country is rapidly decreasing due to the increasing number of vaccinations, warmer temperatures, which make people spend more time outdoors, and the large amount of available rapid tests used for work, school or other activities.

Germany has implemented many easing of measures in recent weeks. For example, terraces, museums, exhibitions and public swimming pools are open again. In many places, however, visitors must show a vaccination certificate or a recent negative corona test or be able to demonstrate that they have already had the corona virus and have recovered.

Further easing was planned in several German states before they found fewer than 50 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. For example, in several cities and districts in Bavaria, the obligation to hand over a negative corona test at sports events, theaters, public swimming pools and gyms will be lifted if the infection rate remains stable.

In the federal state of Hesse, it will again be possible in some areas to meet more people at home and eat indoors at restaurants and cafes. Pupils and students are also allowed to go back to school completely, although rapid tests are still used there

10.30 – People from 1977 and 1978 are allowed to schedule a corona vaccination appointment

People born in 1977 and 1978 can make an appointment for a corona vaccination from 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, tweets outgoing corona minister Hugo de Jonge. These people will soon receive a letter with an invitation, but from that moment on they can already schedule an appointment online.

If you want to be vaccinated, you can go to one of the 136 vaccination locations of the GGD. People who have already been vaccinated because of their profession or because of health problems can discard the invitation.

Currently, approximately one million people are vaccinated each week. Some of them receive the first shot and others are already ready for the repeat vaccination. So far, 9,099,559 shots have been taken in our country, according to the government’s corona dashboard. This figure includes both first and second shots.

06.50 – More than half of the US population has received the first shot prik

In the United States, more than half of all residents have now received the first vaccination against the corona virus, according to data from the American health service CDC. About 40 percent of the approximately 330 million Americans have already received two upper arm shots.

The vaccination rate among the roughly 260 million adults is more than 62 percent. They have received at least one vaccination, more than 51 percent of them have already been fully vaccinated. Figures from the CDC also show that 86 percent of all people over 65 have received at least one dose.

US President Joe Biden has set a goal that by July 4 (Independence Day), about 70 percent of all adults should have received at least their first vaccination. Many states, municipalities and companies try to entice people to get vaccinated through lotteries, where they can win big prizes such as cruises.

In the United States, the vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech, which require two injections, are the most popular. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is fully effective after just one dose, currently accounts for less than five percent of all vaccinations.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was approved in the US earlier this month for children as young as 12 years old, the remaining drugs are currently only for use in adults.

06.30 – More than 100 US hospital employees go to court because of vaccination

A group of 117 health workers at a Texas hospital have filed a lawsuit against their employer for requiring them to be vaccinated, The Washington Post reports. They argue that mandatory vaccination against the coronavirus violates the Nuremberg Code, standards designed after World War II to prevent experiments on human subjects without their consent.

According to the employees, if they refuse to be tested, they will lose their jobs. In their view, this violates state law, which is why they are asking the court to prevent the hospital in Houston from firing unvaccinated employees.

In the US, more than half of all residents have now had a first shot against the lung virus. Many states, municipalities and companies try to entice people to get vaccinated through lotteries, where they can win big prizes such as cruises.

However, the vast majority of employers are reluctant to require employees to be vaccinated. A survey by management law firm Fisher Phillips earlier this year found that just 9 percent of the more than 700 employers surveyed said they would consider making vaccines mandatory.
