Thousands of residents of New Zealand’s South Island prepare for an evacuation due to flooding. After heavy rainfall in the Canterbury region, on the east side of the island, the water level in the Ashburton River has risen sharply.
In the town of Ashburton, with a population of about 35,000, 4,000 people may have to leave their homes. It is expected that the rain will not stop for the time being, causing the water level to rise further. Several highways in the region are closed.
