The mass grave was discovered at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia, which was founded in 1890 by the Catholic Church. In 1969 the federal government took over the management of the school in Kamloops, nine years later the institution was closed. In 2015, a commission of inquiry concluded that at least 51 children had died in the school between 1915 and 1963.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau spoke of “a painful reminder of a dark and shameful chapter in our country’s history” after the discovery of the mass grave.
