Corey Kluber’s injury opens the door for the young Dominican pitcher to be relevant to the New York Yankees
Dominican starter Deivi Garcia will have their second appearance of the season this Saturday when the New York Yankees faces are seen before Spencer Turnbull and the Detroit Tigers.
The Bronx put the 35-year-old pitcher on the disabled list for 10 days. Corey Kubler, due to problems in his right shoulder.
Before the start of the season, it was expected that Garcia could stay with a place in the team’s rotation, however, perhaps due to his youth, the Yankees opted for other options.
The 22-year-old has only had one outing in the regular season where he faced the Baltimore Orioles, taking the loss with a full four innings of three hits, two earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
However, he had an acceptable performance in training fields where opponents hit .240, with a 3.86 ERA and 14 strikeouts in as many innings.
Kluber’s injury that will keep him out for at least 4 weeks, and a few more days to get back into the rhythm of competition, opens up the golden opportunity for García to show that despite his youth he has the talent to contribute in the older, and incidentally avoid the fourth defeat in the last five meetings for the New York team.
In preseason Garcia faced the Tigers in a three-inning outing where he only allowed two hits (a Miguel Cabrera and his compatriot Jeimer Candelario), striking out five opponents without conceding transfers.
And although things have not gone in the best way in the minors, with 4 starts and a 5.17 ERA, with 12 walks in and 9 earned runs in 15.2 innings, the Dominican has managed to strike out 21 opponents.
Between the dilemma of the receiver position and the Yankees’ injuries, Garcia could be a ray of light that becomes important in the rotation of the team, at least until Kluber returns, and it is an opportunity that should not be missed.
