“Eurovision trap to idiots”: the rant of Eric Brunet

According to Éric Brunet, columnist at RTL, Eurovision is not what it used to be. According to him, the image of the European musical competition would be tarnished by frequent votes of “sympathy”, when it is not telescoped by geopolitical issues.

Eurovision is not Eric Brunet’s cup of tea. The RTL columnist had harsh words on Friday May 28 against the competition that crowned Italy, Saturday, May 22, and placed France in second place with its representative Barbara Pravi, who performed his song ” Here “. In his post, Éric Brunet deplored a competition which, according to him, “Has lost its original vocation: to create indissoluble links between European countries”.

The presence of Turkey, Israel, but also Australia, annoys Eric Brunet who recalls that these countries are not part of the Old Continent. As a reminder, Australia was included in the European musical competition in 2015 on the occasion of the institution’s fiftieth anniversary, on an exceptional basis. The country, which broadcasts Eurovision each year since 1983, has many fans of the competition, which brings together singers and groups as crazy as they are original. This one-off invitation was subsequently reiterated in 2016, then in 2017, before Australia was definitively included in the competition. A way for Eurovision, the most watched musical competition in the world, to establish its image internationally.

“This thing is not serious”

Very little for Éric Brunet, who also points the finger “The geopolitical dimension of Eurovision”. The columnist recalls that in 2014, when Russia had just annexed Crimea, Ukraine received many votes in the musical competition – which it thus won – as political support. In 2003, England had, on the contrary, suffered its political choices during the great European musical evening: due to its engagement in Iraq alongside the United States, the United Kingdom had not received any points.

“And I’m not talking to you regular exchanges of votes between countries that get along well ”, continues the RTL columnist, who talks about Belgium and the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, but also the Scandinavian countries and the former Yugoslav republics, which regularly vote for each other. “No, this thing is not serious”, he sums up, before emphasizing how “kitsch” the competition is. “Next year, I will make myself a bottle of Menetou-Salon with friends while singing songs by Véronique Sanson”, foresees Éric Brunet, definitely up against “Eurovision, stupid trap”.
