Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – One year after the killing of the African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation, several hundred people demonstrated against racism in Düsseldorf. The supporters of the movement “Black lives matter” (in German: “Counting black lives”) marched through the city center of Düsseldorf to the state parliament on Saturday. As the police said on request, the rally was peaceful. The control center in Düsseldorf counted around 300 participants in the afternoon, while observers spoke of up to 500.

Many protested with their fists raised as a symbol of resistance and solidarity. Their banners read: “no justice – no peace”, “silence is violence” or “united against racism and fascism”.

Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota had sparked demonstrations against racism and police violence in the United States that lasted for months. White ex-cop Derek Chauvin, who had his knee pressed to Floyd’s neck for a good nine minutes while he pleaded with him to breathe, was found guilty a month ago. The sentence is scheduled to be pronounced on June 25th.
