Mali coup leader appointed interim president

As expected, the leader of the coup in Mali, Assimi Goita, has been named interim president of the West African country. The Malian Supreme Court has appointed him to lead “the change process” until next February’s elections.

The 38-year-old army colonel Goita has been vice president under President Ndaw since last year. Monday he left Arrest Ndaw and Prime Minister Quane. They were released on Thursday after resigning from their positions.

According to Goita, Ndaw had fired two ministers without consultation and that was the reason for their arrest.

Since Goita led the coup, he was already expected to be appointed as interim president. After the coup, Ecowas, the alliance of fifteen West African countries, had called on not to appoint a military.

Ecowas and many western countries have expressed their concerns about the unrest in Mali in recent days. Al-Qaida and Islamic State are already active in the country and it is feared that they are profiting from the political instability. Tomorrow the Ecowas leaders will meet in Ghana.
