The number of infections is still rising. There is a shortage of oxygen, shelter capacity and emergency personnel. The latest statistics have shown that a mutated variant from Brazil has gripped Suriname and also causes many young people to die. The president also noted that all the people who have died in recent times had not been vaccinated. He therefore called on everyone to get vaccinated.
Proclaiming code black means, according to Santokhi, that the hospitals will be set up completely differently and that all help is focused on the Covid patients. More than one million euros has been earmarked for this.
Supermarkets
During the total lockdown, only supermarkets, bakeries, butchers and construction shops are allowed to open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The latter companies are allowed to be open because many Surinamese have to deal with heavy flooding as a result of heavy rainfall in recent days.
Only people aged eighteen and older are allowed to enter the store, with no more than ten people at a time. The Surinamese Minister of Justice and Police has warned that compliance with the lockdown rules is being closely monitored.
This also applies to border security in the east and west of Suriname. The purpose of these checks is to keep illegal visitors who may cause infections outside the country.
Suriname can expect the necessary foreign aid in the near future. This includes the shipment of between 500,000 and 750,000 AstraZeneca vaccines, two oxygen containers, medicines, medical devices and the deployment of Dutch medical personnel.
