The incident took place around 10:20 PM on the lawn at Vondel CS. Several people there probably witnessed the incident, because in the evening many young Amsterdammers walked out to relax in the park.
Police were told from several people that an armed man was walking around the park. When officers saw him, they first warned and then fired a warning shot. Because he ignored that, shots were fired afterwards.
“The police ran after this person and said: ‘Halt or I shoot’, after which three bullets followed,” a witness told city broadcaster AT5.
Research
It is not clear whether the man was actually carrying a firearm, as the police say. A spokesperson can only report that ‘something’ has been found. The man is not in mortal danger. He is taken to hospital. The National Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the case. Part of the park has been evacuated.
