The South American counterpart of the Euro was to be held jointly in Colombia and Argentina, but CONMEBOL withdrew Colombia as co-host last week due to the ongoing unrest in that country (the postponement request by the Colombian authorities were rejected by the continental body).
“We spoke with Chile, which could take charge of the part left by Colombia”, said Gonzalo Belloso, Secretary General of CONMEBOL. Argentina has said it is ready to host the entire competition but it is facing an outbreak of Covid-19 cases. The health crisis had already led to the postponement of the competition, initially scheduled for 2020.
