At the age of 53, the highly respected and prominent vascular surgeon and head of the Clinic at Sofiamed University Hospital, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Markov, MD, passed away, the press center of the medical institution reported.
The management and the team of Sofiamed Hospital offer their sincerest condolences to the family and his relatives. Bulgaria has lost another worthy and distinguished doctor, an incredible professional in his field and a respected colleague in the medical and scientific circles. A tribute to his memory!
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Markov was born on June 5, 1967 in the town of Belogradchik. He graduated in medicine in 1991 at the Medical University of Sofia. From 1992 to March 1993 he worked as a volunteer at the University Hospital “St. Catherine” – Sofia. After a competition he was appointed assistant surgeon at “St. Ekaterina ”, where she has been working for 14 years. For 1 year he was part of the cardiac surgery team of the hospital, and the next 13 he worked in the vascular surgery clinic in the team of Prof. Alexander Chirkov. He acquired two specialties – general (1998) and vascular surgery (2002).
In 2002 has been appointed lecturer in vascular surgery for medical students and specialists in vascular surgery. Since 2004 has been appointed Chief Assistant at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. In November 2012 he defended his dissertation on “Analysis of complications of thrombendarterectomy of the carotid arteries. A multimodal approach. ” and was awarded the degree of Doctor of General and Cardiovascular Surgery. From 2006 to 2014 he worked in the Department of Vascular Surgery and Angiology at Tokuda Hospital Sofia. He actively participates in the team for kidney transplants at the University Hospital “Alexandrovska”. He has been the Head of the Vascular Surgery Clinic of Sofiamed University Hospital since 2014. In August 2017. obtains the scientific degree of “associate professor”.
Assoc. Prof. Markov is one of the most prominent vascular surgeons in the country, who performed a number of unique for Bulgaria surgical interventions and introduced many innovative methods for vascular reconstructions and minimally invasive techniques in vascular surgery. He has over 40 scientific papers and publications; His research interests and work are also in the field of kidney transplantology, surgical treatment of AAA, carotid surgery and others. He is a member of the Bulgarian National Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Angiology and the Bulgarian Association of Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery.
