Postfinance spokesman Johannes Möri: “We have not been able to bear the negative market interest rates ourselves for a long time.”

Tens of thousands of customers are receiving unpleasant mail from Postfinance these days. “Due to the negative market interest rates and the ban on credit, the pressure on our interest rate differential business has increased significantly in recent years,” says the letter that is available to Blick.
–
That means in plain language: Postfinance informs its customers about the so-called threshold above which they have to pay negative interest. Anyone with more than CHF 100,000 in their Postfinance account pays negative interest of 0.75 percent – if they don’t have any Postfinance investment products such as funds or a mortgage.
–
However, if you have assets of 100,000 francs and you have also invested 50,000 francs in funds at Postfinance, the threshold rises to 175,000 francs. Means: negative interest is only due from 175,000 francs.
–
“You can raise your threshold with investment products such as funds or other securities,” advises Postfinance to its customers. That means: Postfinance wants to promote the sale of investment products in this way.
–
Regime is tightened
Postfinance justifies the tightening as follows: “We have not been able to bear the negative market interest rates ourselves for a long time and are therefore increasingly passing them on to our customers from July 1, 2021 by tightening the existing credit fee regime,” says Postfinance spokesman Johannes Möri to look.
–
He does not want to say how many customers will be affected by negative interest rates from July 1st. However, Möri attaches importance to the fact that most private and business customers would continue to pay no negative interest.
–
“We protect small savers”
“With the new regulation, we are particularly protecting small savers who, despite the high pressure on our result, benefit from a threshold of CHF 100,000 regardless of their fixed assets,” he continues.
–
If you do not receive a letter by June 24, you can be sure that you will not be affected by the adjustment of the credit charges, according to the Postfinance spokesman.
–
Are customers withdrawing funds?
Many customers should not put up with that and withdraw their money. This is entirely in the spirit of Postfinance: Experts assume that this is not only accepted, but desired.
–
The goal: The financial institution of the Post hopes that after this shrinking course it will no longer be viewed as systemically relevant – and that it will have to build up equity to a lesser extent. The Swiss National Bank defines systemic relevance through its position in payment transactions, market share, size, risk profile and networking.
