The infection rate is falling – hope is increasing: Will the city marketing and culture department soon be doing something again in Bergkamen? Here are the answers:

Bergkamen – Like shareholders the stock market price, Karsten Quabeck keeps an eye on the ups and downs of the incidence values every day. The soaring heights that could be read there meant one major loss after another in city marketing. No harbor festival, not in the previous and not this year. But the turnaround seems to have been initiated. If the infection rate continues to fall, the city of Bergkamen could hold public events again from August.

After the harbor fire in ’20 the stove was out

“If someone had told me that the harbor fire from January 24th to 16th, 2020 will be the last event you are organizing for a long time, I would have bet a thousand euros against it,” says Quabeck, describing the unimaginable test of patience that the organizers, artists and audience have to face still have to endure.

Wine festival canceled in July

After all, the “enjoyment of wine by the water” is an established rendezvous without much fanfare on the planned date 16./17. July is unthinkable even with the current 7-day incidence around 45 in the Unna district. “We officially canceled that on Thursday,” said Quabeck. But that will soon be the end of it with the red pencil in the calendar of events.

Holland market could be the prelude

“Wait and see” is his confident motto for August 1st. Holland market – something could work there. “The dealers have rifles at their feet and with the move to the Nordberg we have more space, access and options”. The location of the Schützenplatz in Overberge also gives Quabeck hope that it will be able to develop the open-air cinema in a corona-compliant manner on August 7th. “It’s fenced in, and admission control and placement at a distance are not a problem. The screen has been ordered, we can already find a film suitable for families ”.

New Year’s Eve concert in August

Justus Frantz and the “MLW Festival Philharmonie” should have given the turn of the year a sparkle in Bergkamen, and should have made a guest appearance in May as an alternative. There were already waiting lists for the cards, but no chance in the pandemic. Now the cultural department is planning the whole thing as an open air event in the marina, probably in August. You don’t want to let out more because of the risks. Those interested in the waiting list should be contacted. For administration manager Sarah Feige, it is set that a picnic concert will be held in the Römerpark in June, July and August. More details will be available shortly.

There is still a question mark around August 15, when the castle festival at the Bummansburg, including the medieval camp, is to take place under the direction of the cultural department. Those responsible are still checking with museum director Marc Schrader whether the plans are valid.

“Kids & Burger” is the next number in Quabeck’s calendar: On 21./22. August with the inflatable Tobe locks from “Monkey Island” as a cooperation partner in the fresh air in the marina. Why not?

For marketing, with the necessary virus reservation, of course, the “classic open air” is set. At the wood-earth wall in the Römerpark, “The Charming Tenor”, Stefan Lex, with two fellow musicians of this voice range is supposed to delight the audience on September 11th – even if only a few guests are allowed in.

Focus on the festival of lights on October 29th

The market in the public order office must assess how things are going at the autumn fair from October 8th to 10th. City marketing wants to work hard on October 29th. Then there could be the festival of lights. For the most popular and lavish event after the harbor festival, due to the considerable budget for five hours of magic lights, it is important to consider in good time the risk of an inevitable cancellation at the last moment. “The festival cannot be made for 20,000 to 30,000 euros,” Quabeck points out. The highlight in the program will be produced especially for Bergkamen. “But we have made sure of that and, if necessary, will show it at the 20th Festival of Lights in 2022.”

Everything outside at the end of the year

For him, the planting festival on November 6th in the Bürgerwald is conceivable, and as far as the pre-Christmas markets in the districts are concerned, “I can only hope that it works.” The head of the city marketing team would rather think of 2022. That actually begins – bet complacent – with the harbor fire.
