Hydrogen fuel cell technology ecologically illuminates the Eiffel Tower

People who had taken a walk along the Eiffel Tower the night before must have noticed that the Paris symbol was lit in ecological green. The transformation of the city symbol was carried out within the framework of the Energy Observer’s Paris de l’hydrogène project, the green light symbolizing certified renewable hydrogen, which drives the Toyota fuel cell hydrogen generator GEH2 developed by EODev (Energy Observer Developments).

The GEH2 generator also supplies energy to the Energy Observer tents at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Several companies offering hydrogen energy and mobility solutions are showcasing their vehicles and applications to demonstrate a sustainable and innovative urban perspective for the future.

Our solution brings the lighting of the Eiffel Tower into a new era of technological, sustainable progress. We are confident that this initiative will be followed by many others, holding their celebrations with clean energy in the future. We expect the most beautiful monuments in France and elsewhere to be illuminated with sustainable energy solutions. Also symbolic, initiatives such as EODev GEH2 highlight zero-emission solutions that are already in place today.

Jeremy Lagarig, Head of EODev

It also presents a variety of solutions using Toyota hydrogen fuel cell technology, including the new generation Mirai modeli, The city bus and REXH2 solution developed by CaetanoBus to increase the distance traveled in shipping, as well as the GEH2 generator developed by EODev. All of these products are available on the market today, providing real-world solutions and attention from national governments, industry, the media, customers and the public.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology will be key to Toyota’s ability to meet its carbon neutrality target by 2050. This commitment was made in 2015, when we announced our environmental challenge for 2050 and launched the Mirai, the world’s first series-produced hydrogen fuel cell car.

We also believe that hydrogen fuel cell technology will play a key role in achieving carbon neutrality throughout the global transport ecosystem, not only in the automotive sector, but also in the bus, truck, rail, aviation, shipping and stationary generators sectors.

Matt Harrison, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe

As the official mobility partner for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Paris has a special relationship with Toyota. During the Games in 2024, Toyota will provide zero-emission vehicles and advanced mobility products to underline its commitment to zero-emission mobility solutions and “Mobility for All”.

Charged opinion

There is no doubt that solutions already exist. However, the efficiency of the hydrogen system in mobility solutions is not the best, which means that in the context of the European Green Course, which states that energy efficiency is one of the most important aspects of decision-making, hydrogen cell solutions are still in question. Also, the operating costs are not so sweet as to calculate the payback period.

No matter how much Toyota praises hydrogen and highlights it as the only solution that will help achieve climate neutrality, the company plans to offer more battery electric car as hydrogen.
