The medical students in Göttingen are again participating in a nationwide blood donation competition. Until June 4th they try to collect as many blood donations as possible.

Göttingen – Which medical faculty can raise the most blood donations in Germany? The medical students in Göttingen have until June 4th to decide this question for themselves. Last year, the Medis collected 1,272 blood donations in four weeks and thus made it into the top 3 in the competition.

Medical students from the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), together with the blood donation service “Blood for the Clinic”, call for the campaign under the motto “Medis donated blood”. Even non-medis can participate and donate.

This year’s competition also specifically calls on medical staff to donate blood, reports the UMG. A new category has been added to the evaluation catalog for this purpose.

Blood donation by the Göttingen Medis: “Blood Donation Ambassador”

To motivate more people to donate blood and thus to actively help more people is the concern of the university group “Blood Donation Ambassadors”, who organize the nationwide competition on site in Göttingen.

“Of course, donating blood is very important always and at all times. Because the blood reserves are becoming increasingly scarce, ”says Merle Göben, who is studying human medicine in the fourth semester. “We want to encourage people to donate blood again for the first time or after a longer period of time.”

Background: There is a decline in blood donations across Germany, especially in times of the corona pandemic. The UMG blood donation service alone received ten percent fewer blood donations compared to the previous year.

Blood donation from Göttingen Medis: Donations are important for patient care

There is no substitute for blood and blood donations from healthy people are often even life-saving, according to the UMG. Above all, blood donors are of great importance, who donate regularly to ensure patient care in the region.

The UMG blood donation service is represented at two locations: “Blood donation in the clinic” at Robert-Koch-Straße 40, and “Blood donation on campus” at Weender Landstraße 1. Further information is available at medisspendenblut.de and blutspende.umg.eu. (Kornelia Schmidt-Hagemeyer)
