Minister must make new decision about breeding French bulldogs: will they get their muzzle back? | Inland

There has been discussion about the breeding of French bulldogs for years. Opponents argue that the dogs have been bred through and that they suffer seriously from their sought after appearance by the breeder. Breeders and their trade association say they have taken steps to combat extreme physical characteristics and that pedigree dogs are now responsibly bred.

Snout too short

The Animal Law Foundation wanted enforcement by sixteen breeders, ten of whom are affiliated with the Dutch Bulldog Club. According to the foundation, animals are bred with harmful external breed characteristics, which are passed on to offspring. The Animal Keepers Decree (Bhd) states that this is prohibited. According to the CBb, the foundation rightly requests enforcement, since standing up for animal welfare is the goal of the foundation.

Dierenrecht provided photos of the breeders’ websites showing dogs that have too short snouts and too dense noses according to scientific criteria. The ministry considered that insufficient evidence. The CBb finds it strange that, despite the rejection, the Ministry decided to check a number of breeders. The CBb now advises the ministry to conduct further investigations at a number of breeders before a new decision is made.
