POSCO Mexico, a steel company that provides steel sheets for the automotive and household appliances industry, located in the Altamira Industrial Zone since 2006, promotes an initiative from its headquarters in South Korea called “1% Donation”, to donate 1% of the employee salary for the creation of a fund to improve the community.
In this way, Choi Soon Young from POSCO Mexico, allocates a monthly financial contribution in the search to solve social problems and take the initiative to create a better society.
For this period, it was decided that the management of the project with the funds raised from the program will be used to meet the emerging needs of society in terms of security, which will be the main activity to work on this year.
In this regard, Jeong-Woo Choi, CEO of POSCO, said that, to become a centennial company, “we must focus on four key initiatives this year: safety, creativity as a means of competitive advantage in the steel industry, sustainable growth and fostering a culture of trust and harmony to think creatively and take on challenges ”.
In addition, he recalled that, as a company committed to carbon neutral by 2050, “the most urgent global mission of each country, city, financial institution and company must adopt plans to make the transition to net zero emissions, and act now to moving towards the achievement of this objective, aligned with this direction, POSCO Mexico is taking specific actions to leave its mark, promoting a safer environment for all ”.
Safe roads, priority
Due to the type of commercial activities that take place in the Altamira Industrial Zone due to the recurring heavy cargo traffic during the day and even more so for the night hours, it is essential to maintain the correct and perfect conditions of the concrete and lighting, which will allow safer transfers for the well-being of employees, business partners and the community at large.
With the economic fund of the “1% Donation” program of five thousand dollars raised for social investment obtained from this program, it was possible to develop different technical studies in search of improving the performance of current luminaires, implementing new strategies and manuals to promote a culture preventive maintenance instead of corrective maintenance, which increases costs considerably.
In addition, signaling and safety equipment was fitted out to protect workers and users in the concrete repair sections, supporting maintenance tasks.
Teamwork was essential, therefore it is worth highlighting the collaboration of Altamira API to guide the development of this study with the aim of making the resources destined to the maintenance of the roads more efficient, achieving roads with adequate conditions for all citizens, lamps in operation for a better visibility of the drivers and daily transfers more insurance.
This type of projects of mutual benefit is an example of the different levels of social responsibility that can be practiced from the private initiative.
And it is that, due to the pandemic caused by covid-19, different pre-established Social Responsibility activities were suspended, so POSCO Mexico It has sought a way to face challenges and make the greatest efforts to direct its business philosophy “Corporate Citizenship: Building a better future together” and reinforce its culture of “Safety First”, a priority motto for any activity carried out.
