Zhurong has slid off his landing platform onto the planet’s surface and started his exploration mission on the Red Planet.

The solar-powered rover robot on Saturday (22/5) at 10:40 Beijing time, began its journey from the path of the lander capsule to the surface of Mars.
Zhurong first landed on Mars earlier this month and began his journey on the Martian surface on the Utopia Planitia, the smooth plain where the NASA Viking 2 lander landed in 1976.
The distance is more than 1,900 kilometers from Jezero Crater where the US robot rover Perseverance landed.
The Zhurong robot will study the planet’s surface rocks and atmospheres. It will also look for signs of life, including water or ice beneath the planet’s surface on a mission expected to last 90 days.

The name Zhurong is taken from the Chinese god of fire. The explorer robot has advanced technology such as the Mars-Rover Subsurface Exploration Radar, Mars Magnetic Field Detector, Mars Meteorology Monitor, and high-resolution topographic cameras.
Apart from China, the European Space Agency and Russia’s Roscosmos Space Corporation also plan to land the rover on Mars in 2022.
