It is now possible to subscribe to MyCanal through the iOS application. But if we are to believe Mac4ever, this will soon no longer be possible. The reason seems to be the commission from Apple and its App Store.
MyCanal wouldn’t be the first app to drop the subscription from its iOS app. Netflix did this a few years ago. The video streaming service criticized Apple’s 30% commission, especially since it applies to all iOS subscriptions, every month. The platform is therefore always accessible from an iPhone or iPad, but you have to go through the site to subscribe. This story should soon be similar on the MyCanal side.
You should know that the French platform has been offering since 2020 the possibility of paying via its own billing system, rather than the App Store. It’s a pass granted by Apple (Amazon Prime Video has the same, as does Altice One). This normally gets around Apple’s 30% commission. But obviously, MyCanal is not satisfied.
The group has not yet officially communicated on the withdrawal of the subscription from its iOS application. This information comes in any case at a time when Apple is facing a lot of criticism. There has in particular been the Apple-Epic trial in recent weeks, with Epic Games precisely criticizing the obligation to use Apple’s payment system within applications.
