Congo volcanic eruption most killed by flight chaos | Abroad

The volcano erupted on Saturday evening. The lava stopped just before the city limits of the 2 million inhabitants of Goma. At least seventeen villages were partially or completely destroyed by the lava.

On Sunday many people who had fled Goma went back to the city, many of them had crossed the border into Rwanda to find a safe haven. According to Unicef, more than 150 children have been separated from their parents in the chaos leaving Goma and at least 170 children are still missing.

The director of the regional prison says four inmates were shot while trying to take advantage of the chaos by escaping. They are not added by authorities to the death toll surrounding the eruption.

A spokesman for the governor of North Kivu province says the most important thing now is to help the people who have lost everything. President Félix Tshisekedi returns earlier from a visit to Europe to oversee aid.
