The 29th Club La Santa Ironman Lanzarote will take place on Saturday, July 3rd, 2021, and is therefore one of the few opportunities in Europe to qualify for the Ironman World Championship 2021 on October 9th in Hawaii in the 2021 season. The oldest existing European Ironman race has developed into an absolute long-distance classic since it was first held in 1992. A finish on Avenida de las Playas is definitely part of every triathlon palmares.
The Ironman Lanzarote got the classic status due to its special routing in connection with the mostly extremely challenging conditions. Nothing is given for free on Lanzarote, all the more the value of a finisher shirt that you have won there over the 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.2 km running. “I would recommend everyone to take up the challenge, because – only those who have finished Lanzarote, the toughest in the world, are a real Ironman,” says the Danish Michelle Vesterby, who won the race in 2012.

The ideal preparation: Via Lanzarote to Kona
For all triathletes who want to fulfill their dream of participating in Ironman Hawaii with a finish on Alii Drive, there is a chance of a total of 40 qualification slots on Lanzarote. Since only a good 800 athletes are registered this year due to the long uncertain Corona situation, the chance of one of the coveted Kona qualifications is correspondingly greater. Assuming the own shape is “Lanzarote-worthy”. A positive side effect: If you get the Hawaii qualification on Lanzarote, you should also be able to pass the conditions on the Big Island.
A racing course that has it all
But even if it is “only” about the finish, the race on the northernmost Canary Island has a lot to offer. So the racing course in Lanzarote has always been legendary. The start takes place directly in the center of Puerto del Carmen at Playa Grande. For the safety of the athletes, the start is now carried out as a rolling start and the swim course has recently been completed in a large rectangle without going ashore.
The bike course is then a complete Lanzarote sightseeing. As before, there is a big round around the whole island, as was the original idea of the founder of the race, Kenneth Gasque. The highlights are the bizarre coast of El Golfo, the passage of the Timanfaya National Park with its legendary volcanic cones, the drive over the Mirador del Haria, followed by the Mirador del Rio, with the breathtaking view of the small neighboring island of La Graciosa. The 2,500 vertical meters and the often strong trade winds ensure a fair selection of the field.

Back in Puerto del Carmen, the marathon then waits in three turning point loops, the first of which leads past the Arrecife airport to Playa Honda. The second half of the marathon showdown will then only take place along the beach promenade of Puerto del Carmen before the red finish carpet on Avenida de las Playas.
150 starting places left – registration possible until June 13th
The linchpin of all other events related to the race is the Club La Santawhich, with its extensive range of sports, is also an ideal location for the final preparation for the race. Due to the corona hygiene regulations, there is a participant restriction for the starter field. Currently there are still 150 starting places available for the 29th Club La Santa Ironman Lanzarote on July 3rd.
Registration is still possible until June 13, 2021.
