Tourists who want to come to Chemnitz in the cultural capital year 2025 have to be prepared for an arduous journey by train. In the future, a connection of the city to long-distance traffic with direct connections to Munich, Düsseldorf, Hanover, Berlin and Rostock is planned. To do this, however, several routes would first have to be expanded, said a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn at the request of the German Press Agency. With the expansion of the Chemnitz-Leipzig route and the electrification on the Hof-Regensburg and Weimar-Gößnitz routes, commissioning is not expected by 2025.
So far, only a direct connection via Dresden to Berlin seems secure. There should be an invitation to tender for this. The state and the Central Saxony transport association have signed a financing agreement, according to which long-distance trains between Berlin and BER Airport via Dresden to Chemnitz should run again from summer 2022 – but possibly only twice a day in both directions.
