Felipe Mora scored a couple of goals in the second half and the Portland Timbers beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-0 on Saturday.
It was the second loss of the season for the Galaxy, who started on fire with four wins in their first five games. This time, the Los Angeles team was decimated as Derrick Williams received a red card late in the first half.
“We stuck to the plan and we were very mature at all times during the game, to obtain a very important result that we needed at home,” said Giovanni Savarese, Venezuelan coach of the Timbers. “We got another three points and we keep adding.”
The Timbers, who have scored two victories, managed to annul Mexican Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, who leads MLS with seven goals for the Galaxy this season.
“We couldn’t keep defending well or generate enough on the other end of the court to make up for it,” coach Greg Vianney lamented.
Argentine Diego Valeri played from the start, after being a substitute in the previous game, and converted a penalty for Portland’s third goal, in the 69th minute.
Mora scored his first goal at 47 and the second at 60.
The Timbers continued to miss Colombian Diego Chará and Larrys Mabiala, due to respective injuries.
In another meeting, the Ecuadorian Gustavo Valecilla scored one of the goals with which Cincinnati beat Montreal 2-1.
