Secondary schools will be fully open again from 31 May

The secondary schools can be fully reopened to all students from 31 May. From 7 June, there is an obligation for the entire secondary education. The students no longer have to keep a distance of five feet from each other. The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) has advised the cabinet to take this decision.

Not all schools will open their doors on Monday in a week. Some need more preparation time, said Minister Slob for Secondary Education after a Catshuis meeting between the most involved cabinet members and experts.

But a week later, the entire secondary education must be fully open again. “We want to make it possible for the students to go to school for at least another six weeks before the summer holidays begin.” The first school holidays start in the North region on July 10.

Mandatory masks remain

According to the OMT, it is responsible to have the secondary school students all go to school at the same time. The one-and-a-half meter measure between students is then released, but the duty to mask the mouth remains. This applies in secondary education outside of classes, in the school building.

From the end of next week, all schools will have sufficient self-tests for students and teachers. It is an important condition of the OMT that they do such a test at home twice a week.
