Economy – Erfurt – IWH boss Gropp optimistic: Catch-up wave in consumption is coming – economy

Halle / Erfurt (dpa) – The President of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle assumes good economic prospects despite the uncertainties caused by the pandemic. “One can be optimistic that we will not see a wave of bankruptcies,” said IWH boss Reint Gropp in a conversation with MDR Thuringia published on Saturday.

In the data available to the institute, no signs of increased bankruptcies can be found so far. One could also expect a catch-up wave in consumption. “If these two factors stay that way, we can be relatively optimistic about the economic development in the next six to nine months – Germany’s economy is clearly on the up again.”

“If we manage to get more or less out of this story by June with testing and so on, then I would say we won’t see a wave of bankruptcies either.” That way, there would be no difficulties in the banking system and companies could get loans or family mortgages to buy a home.

Many people also accumulated savings over the period of the pandemic because they could not spend their money and could not go on vacation, for example. The question is whether it will be issued in the summer or over a longer period of time.

Gropp said trends in the pandemic would likely persist afterwards. He believes “that it will simply be a matter of course that a company or a public service has to offer its employees home office – at least a few days a week”.
