“My name is Joe Biden and I’m a guy who loves cars”. So far the first words spoken by the new President of the United States, visiting Dearborn (Michigan), are not very original for a politician passing through Motown. The rest of the speech, however, is much more surprising: “The future of the automotive industry is electric. The only question is whether we build these vehicles and the batteries that go with them here in the United States, or whether we will depend on other countries ”.
The future of the automotive industry is electric
Indeed, the electrical transition was one of candidate Biden’s commitments. Now president, Donald Trump’s successor intends to go further than what he revealed in his campaign promises. In addition to the plan to replace the entire US administration’s automobile fleet with electric cars, Joe Biden wants the United States to become an electric vehicle stronghold. The goal is obvious for the new administration in power: to compete with China in what is shaping up to be a major transition in automotive history.
A few minutes before unveiling the electric version of the Ford F-150, the country’s best-selling pickup, the president did not hide his strategy: “To date, China is leading the way. They think they are going to win, but I have news for them, they will not win this race. We can’t let them win ”.

The Sino-American trade war already engaged on smartphones and semiconductors should therefore extend to the automobile. This is a major issue for the new presidency and this is the reason why the plan for the electricity transition is included in a broader strategy, the American Jobs Plan. Concretely, it is an envelope of 2,000 billion dollars which will be devoted to the development of the electric car, whether it is among the various manufacturers or for the national charging network.
