Donald Trump – Loses his grip on the internet

NEW YORK (Dagbladet): The former president has been thrown out of all major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter after the deadly attack on Congress on January 6, and the mention of Trump has fallen to the lowest level in five years.

Recently, he launched his own blog called From the Desk of Donald J. Trump. There, the ex-president expresses himself in the same way as he did on Twitter. At the same time, Trump’s supporters have done everything they can to promote it. But so far the audience has not been thrilled.

It appears from figures from Similarweb, writes Washington Post.

The entire Trump website had about four million visits from mobile and desktop in the United States in the one week before May 18th. That’s about 60 percent of the traffic to right-wing websites like Newsmax and The Gateway Pundit.

Websites such as the recipe site Delish, the pet adoption site Petfinder and the news magazine The Atlantic also had more visitors, according to Similarweb.

The visitor numbers are also a small fraction of the giants that Facebook and Twitter had with 896 million and 329 million visits respectively in the same period. Nor is there any indication that Trump’s supporters have left these platforms since Trump was ousted.

Facebook still had about 195 daily users in the United States in the first three months of the year. Twitter grew by five million daily visitors to 38 million.

The commitment plummets

The numbers may indicate that Trump is becoming irrelevant on the Internet. This is despite the fact that Republicans in Congress are still doing everything they can to be loyal to him.

Most recently last week, Republicans in the House of Representatives loyally supported Trump and ousted Representative Liz Cheney from a leadership position because she refused to agree with Trump’s lies about election fraud and what led to the January 6 attack.

The Washington Post has collected data from four analysis companies. The figures also show that reader engagement around content about Trump in the form of likes, comments and shares has plummeted by 95 percent since January on the platforms Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Pinterest. This is the lowest level since before Trump became president in 2016.

Trump’s blog posts have been shared less than 2,000 times a day on average. By comparison, posts on his Facebook page used to be commented on, shared and liked tens of millions of times. every week, according to research firm BuzzSumo.

– Ridiculous

– People do not follow him to his small desktop platform, and we see it in the numbers. The difference is ridiculous. He no longer has the same ability to constantly place his content in people’s faces as he did before, says IT professor Megan Squire at Elon University to the Washington Post.

When Trump’s supporters attacked Congress on January 6 in an attempt to reverse the election result, Trump had 88 million followers on Twitter and 35 followers on Facebook. When he was thrown out, he had sent out almost 56,000 twitter messages since the first one in 2009. That means the next 13 twitter messages every single day for twelve years.

In the time since January, Trump has largely communicated through his spokesman Jason Miller and press releases. This has made it far more difficult for him to set the agenda as he did before.

Miller promised Twitter May 4 that Trump still plans to launch his own social platform in addition to the blog.

– Successful new social media requires massive amounts of patience and personal investment, and Trump is not really known for any of those qualities. Trump’s biggest obstacle is time. He wants to get the media’s attention back immediately, or by the midterm elections in 2022. And he can not build a real social platform by then, communications consultant Nu Wexler told the Washington Post.

Loyal followers

Others, however, believe it is too early to write off Trump. He still completely dominates the Republican Party, and it is only six months since he received over 70 million votes in the presidential election.

– The 70 million who voted for him keep him relevant. They want someone to organize around, says Professor Leysia Palen at the University of Colorado to the newspaper.

She has researched how Trump’s twitter messages were amplified on the internet, and points out that a large group of Americans will stand up for Trump no matter what he creates.
