Last year it was announced that ABP was reaching deep into its pockets to still pay out a substantial supplement to their pension to thousands of pensioners. That cost the pension fund approximately 100 million euros.
This meant a one-off payment of often more than 10,000 euros per pensioner.
The pensioners who received the extra benefit from ABP were disappointed when the tax authorities came by. Because the pension supplement was paid out in one go, they received a hefty tax assessment and they also had to repay benefits. In some cases they also lost benefits such as housing benefit and healthcare benefit.
Urgent
The MAX Ombudsman Rogier de Haan received many complaints from pensioners and raised the alarm at ABP. According to a spokeswoman, the pension fund is now looking “at what damage we could compensate.” ABP allocates a few weeks to months for this.
De Haan estimates that the total damage amounts to tens of millions and urges ABP to speed up the settlement. On Friday evening, he will discuss the matter further in the Meldpunt broadcast.
MAX Ombudsman Rogier de Haan and TV program Meldpunt started the case, a spokeswoman for the pension fund confirms.
