The Secretary of the Department of Health (DS), Carlos Mellado, announced today, Friday, the voluntary withdrawal of the vaccine Janssen manufactured by Johnson and Johnson, after possible contamination.
“As a precautionary measure and after consultation with our Department health workers, we have made the decision to put vaccination activities with Johnson and Johnson on hold, prioritizing the health and safety of citizens. We will be waiting for the information requested on the batch numbers of vaccines that arrived in Puerto Rico and validate that they are safeMellado López said in written statements.
Currently, 105 providers are receiving doses of Janssen’s vaccine. Of which, five providers have continued their immunization activities.
These providers are: the Immunization and Health Promotion Coalition (VOCES), the College of Surgeons of Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico Salud and the Ashford Hospital, who at the moment will not be able to use the vaccine in compliance with the guidelines of the Department of Health.
Similarly, the Vaccination Center provided to begin today at the Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU) remains on hold until it is known that the vaccine is safe.
“We continue to advance in the immunization process. At the moment, 39% of the population, eligible to be vaccinated, has the series of two doses of the vaccine completed and 49% of the population with at least one dose, “Mellado explained.
“We are on the right track, in five months we have achieved a lot and we continue our efforts with the support of the over 600 providers throughout the Island that receive the vaccine from Pfizer and Moderna,” he added.
