Snapchat releases new sunglasses with built-in AR

Snapchat’s parent company Snap unveiled Spectacles 3 on Thursday night, which lets users see the world around them in Augmented Reality. This means that you can put so-called Snapchat lenses “directly” on the spectacle lens.

Unlike the company’s previous editions of Spectacles, which did not have this functionality, Spectacles 3 will not be available to most people. It is created for a bunch of selected AR creators and is intended as a tool they can use when making lenses for the platform.

Developers can apply to use the glasses for experimentation.

According to a press release from Snap, the glasses weigh 134 grams and offer a “seamless” AR experience for about 30 minutes after each charge. Spectacles 3 uses Dual 3D Waveguide Displays to provide a 26.3 degree diagonal field of view of AR lenses. They have two RGB cameras, four built-in microphones and two stereo speakers.

They are integrated with Snapchat’s Lens Studio application, which allows developers to move their lenses wirelessly to the glasses to test them out.

The news was released at yesterday’s Snap Partner Summit, where top manager Evan Spiegel could also say that Snapchat now reaches 500 million active users.
