Skyline Philadelphia stays dark at night to save birds | Lifestyle

The Bird Safe Philly campaign group is committed to the millions of birds that fly over the city every year during their six-monthly migration.

Bird Safe Philly is joining forces with nearly twenty high-rise buildings in the city. Until at least this month, they will not be illuminated between midnight and 6 a.m.

Last October, thousands of migratory birds in Philadelphia got into trouble after being blinded and disoriented by the bright city lights. The combination of rain and fog, not uncommon in Philadelphia in spring and fall, also caused the birds to crash into buildings en masse.

In 33 other American cities, action groups want to dim the lights.
