‘Empire State’ size cargo ship arrives in NYC

The longest cargo ship to dock on the east coast arrived this morning at the Port Authority’s Elizabeth terminal.

The Marco Polo is 1,300 feet long, which makes it longer than the Empire State Building.

“The arrival of the CMA CGM MARCO POLO at our port underscores the ability of the Port of New York and New Jersey to serve the ultra-large cargo container ships that increasingly transport food, supplies and goods needed to sustain millions of residents, support thousands of jobs and keeping businesses open, ”Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said in a press release.

The entire vessel spans approximately five blocks from Manhattan.

It was the longest cargo ship in the world when it began operating in 2013.

The Bayonne Bridge had to be raised to open a gap of 215 feet.

The ship crossed New York Harbor, near the Statue of Liberty, before heading to the Bayonne Bridge area. He then arrived at the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal, where he will spend two days before departing for Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday.

Before its arrival in North America, the ship traveled through Southeast Asia, and crossed the Suez Canal.
