The ball started rolling in November last year, when Count Charles Spencer – Diana’s brother – exposed the malpractice. BBC journalist Martin Bashir had shown him bank statements at the time, which were supposed to prove that two of Diana’s employees were paid to pass on negative information about her to the intelligence services.
In this way, Bashir wanted to gain access to Diana through Diana’s brother so that he could persuade her to participate in the interview. But those bank statements turned out to be forgeries.
